Mike Raiter: Preaching Biblical Genres – MA Intensive
There’s no doubt that preaching is an important ministry. It requires the preacher to have a solid understanding of the Bible and be able to communicate it in context with insight into application for the church today. If you have the responsibility of preaching God’s word in your church, at conferences or teaching the Bible to any group of people, then this MA intensive is for you. If you have a previous theological degree and qualify for the Master of Arts program, then you can enrol in the unit as a credit subject. Alternatively, if you’re simply interested in learning more about preaching biblical genres, then you can audit at a cost of $295 which enables you to sit in on lectures for the entire week.
The unit will: explore the different literary genres in Scripture (e.g., narrative, wisdom, prophecy) and how to appropriately interpret them; look at what it means to preach different biblical genres to a modern audience taking into account worldview and culture; help students to develop biblical messages that are appropriate to the relevant genres and be sensitive to communication principles.
Mike Raiter is the Director of the Centre for Biblical Preaching in Melbourne, a partnership between the Church Missionary Society (CMS) and St James Old Cathedral, West Melbourne. The Centre exists to train men and women, both pastors and non-pastors in Expository Preaching. Mike was the Head of the Department of Mission at Moore College and, more recently, Principal of Melbourne School of Theology. Mike spent 11 years working in Pakistan, largely in theological education. He is married to Sarah and they have four children (Joel, Nate, Pippa and Lauren). He is the author of over 35 books and articles, most notably the 2004 Australian Christian Book of the Year, Stirrings of the Soul.
