Studying is a 'way of serving the Lord' – Ovidiu Buciu, Felix Arnott Prize Recipient

Dr Johan Ferreira with Ovidiu Buciu, Graduation Ceremony 5 February 2013

Our very own Ovidiu Buciu was awarded the Australian College of Theology’s Felix Arnott Prize (2012). The national award recognises the highest grade point average achieved within an ACT accredited Bachelor of Theology (BTh). Ovi commenced his BTh with Brisbane School of Theology in 2010 and is currently completing his Honours year with the college. Ovi shares some of his inspirations, motivations and looking ahead to the future as he nears the end of his 4th year at BST.

What inspired you to come and study at Brisbane School of Theology?
After I finished high school, I went to TAFE to study music. During that time, I became more passionate about following God. I have always been a Christian, but I felt that I needed a stronger foundation in understanding the Bible. So I spoke to my uncle who is a graduate of the college and he recommended that I study here.
What does your family think of your studying at a Bible college?
It was a surprise, initially, for my family because I was a little bit rebellious in my teenage years. They never expected I would end up studying in theology. But they are extremely happy for me.
My 16 year old brother (I’m the eldest of four) has shown some interest in my textbooks and has made little comments like, ‘those will come in handy if I go to college’.
What has helped you stay on track with your studies?
I realised early on that studying wasn’t just an academic exercise, but most importantly, it’s a way of serving the Lord. Everything I learn isn’t just for my benefit, but it’s for the benefit of the church. The learning process doesn’t just stop to benefit me. As I have come to better know God’s word, I can take it anywhere and share it with others who will also benefit as a result.

Doing the language classes has also helped me to understand the Word so much better. Another thing that has helped me is being involved in campus life. Although I don’t live on campus, I really feel part of it through socialising in the student common room, chapel every Friday and my fellowship group. Our fellowship group is a great testing ground to explore what we have learned and the application of it in real life.
What do you see yourself doing after you finish Honours this year?
While at college camp in March this year, I was really challenged to consider missions. The atmosphere of the camp encouraged us to seek out what we want to do. I felt a desire to serve in Japan. I’ve always had a fascination with Japan and I’m currently learning Japanese. I also recognised my desire to teach. I started out just wanting to study to have a solid foundational knowledge of the Word. As I have progressed, I see more clearly the opportunities for where I can serve.  Depending on what happens at the end of the year, I do have further study in mind.
Do you have a favourite Bible verse?
I don’t have a favourite verse but a favourite chapter: 1 Corinthians 15. I love it because it describes the Christian hope, a renewal which goes beyond what we usually associate with salvation – the decision for Christ. It highlights the glorious hope of resurrection for those who trust and serve Jesus.
What are you reading right now?
Apart from my textbooks and the Bible, I like Japanese comic books and Christian books.
To whom do you look up?
Apart from our lecturers and my pastors, Don Carson and Tom Wright. For me it’s the way they balance church life with academic life that I aspire toward.
What would your advice be for someone who feels a calling to serve the Lord?
Go to college! I’ve realised how important it is to have a solid grounding in the Word.
