Mission exposure in East Asia

Thanks to God and our supporters we continue to equip students to know God’s word so that they can take it to the world. When we interview students for their application to study at BST, we’re encouraged by their desire to know God’s word. Scott* is one of those applicants who felt a deep conviction to study more of the Bible.
Scott, a business owner for more than 18 years, had been visiting Myanmar (formerly Burma), sharing testimonies with the people he met. After several visits to Myanmar, Scott soon came to the realisation that his understanding and knowledge of Scripture was limited.
“I wanted to be equipped to teach people about the gospel and offer them something more solid than just my testimonies,” he said.
“My interest in Myanmar started from a young age, though I didn’t realise it at the time that God had placed that burden on my heart.”
Scott went to Myanmar as part of a church group interested in missions. They initially travelled to Kuala Lumpur to connect with a friend who had been involved in ministry to Chin refugees from Myanmar.
“Through this initial experience, I felt a greater prompting to go to Myanmar and so every year for the last six years I have visited.”
According to Joshua Project, while 80 per cent of the Chin people identify as being Christian only 44 per cent would consider themselves as evangelical.
“Through meeting some of the Chin pastors in Myanmar I’ve learned that a lot of the Chin are nominal Christians, and so there is definitely a great need for the gospel and solid biblical teaching and preaching amongst the Chin people in Myanmar.”
“Coming to BST has been God’s prompting, from the time I started to get a real sense that I needed a deeper understanding of the Bible, to my chance encounter with the BST registrar who was on holidays visiting a church on the northern coast of New South Wales at the same time I was there. He gave me his card and I decided to find out more about the college.”
Scott is in his second year of the Bachelor of Ministry and lives on campus. He gave up his business to pursue full-time ministry training at BST. As part of mission exposure week Scott will be going overseas with our Serve Asia team in April.
“I wanted to go on the trip to broaden my experience of different cultures, and how they do church within that culture,” Scott said.
Our team of students, led by a member of faculty, will spend two weeks in East Asia visiting churches, engaging in ministry to university students, and connecting with foreign gospel workers who serve in various capacities, including: rural development, education, Christian counselling, business and medical work, and tent-making ministries.
We are thankful for students, like Scott, who have a passion to grow in their knowledge of God’s word and a desire to gain valuable cross-cultural experience to serve our Lord Jesus.
You can get involved by praying for Scott and our mission exposure team for their East Asia training. Or donate today to help alleviate the burden of the cost of the trip on our students, like Scott, who have given up full-time work to train for ministry.
