Our Preaching Workshop in February drew a wide range of attendees from various walks of life and ministry. Among them was our own former Deputy Principal (and current sessional lecturer) John Coulson.
Here are his reflections on the day…
“This February we were blessed again to have Mike Raiter come and lead a preaching workshop, this time on Christ-centred preaching.
“As usual, the workshop was engaging, practical and stimulating, and time passed quickly. Mike led us through the process of interpreting the Bible in order to find in a text the gospel and applications for Christian living.
“Some of the texts were very challenging: the story of Lot and his daughters (Gen 19:30-38); the desire for vengeance in Psalm 137. Mike modelled the principle of allowing the New Testament to guide us in finding the gospel and its application in an Old Testament text.
“He also gave practical examples of how to draw moral lessons from the Old Testament. He also urged us to preach Jesus from the New Testament—it’s about Him!—and not only what we need to do.
“The workshop ended with a practice time for each table group from Numbers 25. We showed that we had been awake. When what we found was added together, Mike would have been happy to preach our sermon!”
