Converted at a Billy Graham crusade in Perth at the age of nine, Jim Gibson wanted to serve the Lord from an early age. He realised that he had a passion to evangelise and preach the gospel and so he pursued ministry in the church.
Jim is now the Senior Pastor at Salisbury Baptist Church and will join BST in semester two (2017) as a sessional lecturer teaching Church, Sacraments and Ministry.
When asked what students will expect to gain from studying the subject, Jim enthusiastically responded, “The gospel is a divine message that has spectacular results in ushering people in the Kingdom of God and the life of the Spirit. The church is also a product of the gospel in the visible and social dimension. Students will learn about the identity of the church and its connection to the Christian gospel.”
Jim is keen to help students understand the role of the church as an end times entity.
“The subject will challenge students to see the church as an expression of the Kingdom of God—in the present and what is to come. If you understand that the Kingdom of God is both, then our worship in the church should not just be traditional or contemporary. The worship should be a window into the future worship in glory which we are all headed as a Christians!”
Jim has qualifications in teaching, ministry, and a PhD from Macquarie University that focused on a historical look at the idea of a human awareness of God—hypothesising that a belief in God is so much more possible when the gospel comes as a divine revelation on top of the innate sense of the divine everybody has from creation.
Ordained as a minister with the Queensland Baptists, Jim has more than 40 years’ pastoral ministry experience having served at various churches in Queensland, and for a short time in South Australia. Jim also lectured at Malyon College for more than 20 years, teaching Theology and Evangelism.
He is married to Michelle and they have six children (five adults and one still in high school). In his spare time, Jim loves to watch Aussie Rules (Australian Rules Football) and barrack for the Crows which is largely due to his teenage years spent in Adelaide.
