“God is more powerful than your limitations.”
How wonderful to hear BST Student Andrew’s testimony this semester in Chapel:
“I was born with a disability called autism. This means I was born without the ability to read people’s body language.
In the first two years of my degree at BST, I struggled to know what to do with my degree after I graduated. I believed my autism would prevent me from doing ministry.
When I was working through this issue, God confronted me with His word in Exodus chapter 4, verses 10 to 11. In these verses, Moses basically says his lack of eloquence means he cannot do what God called him to do. God’s answer to Moses is that his inability is not a valid justification for not obeying His call to serve Him. As the creator of human faculties, God is sovereign over them and is able to ensure Moses can do what He calls him to do. Basically, God is bigger than Moses’ problems.
Multiple people pointed out to me that if Moses’ inability was not a valid excuse for not serving God, then my disability is also not a valid excuse for why I couldn’t serve God in ministry. I think this is completely true, and I realised my autism should not stop me from engaging in ministry.
God provided several people in my life who helped me overcome many issues associated with my autism.
I don’t mean to say this arrogantly, but through massive investment in me by others, God has ensured that I become an evangelist who is effective in sharing the gospel with people. Eventually, OAC Ministries offered me an apprenticeship as a walk-up evangelist.
If you think you are not capable of serving God because of some inability, whether a disability, your personality, or something else, I want to encourage you. I mean this with my characteristic bluntness and with genuine kindness: your own limitations are not a valid excuse for why you should not do ministry. God is more powerful than your limitations.”
