Chrysostom’s Insights on Suffering: A New Translation by Dr. Robert Edwards

We’re pleased to highlight a significant new publication from Dr. Robert Edwards, our Lecturer in Christian Thought. Dr. Edwards has recently published his translation of John Chrysostom’s Consolation to Stagirius, a 4th-century treatise now part of The Fathers of the Church series by The Catholic University of America Press.

Written by Chrysostom—one of the early church’s most influential figures—Consolation to Stagirius was composed as a letter of comfort to Stagirius, who was struggling with both physical affliction and emotional distress. Over three books, Chrysostom offers a reflection on suffering and God’s providence, using biblical narratives to help Stagirius see that suffering is not a sign of divine abandonment, but rather part of God’s larger purpose. By drawing on the experiences of saints and prophets, Chrysostom provides a framework for understanding how faith can help navigate life’s challenges.

Dr. Edwards’ translation makes this important work more accessible to contemporary readers, offering a way for modern Christians to engage with the timeless issue of suffering through the lens of early Christian thought.

We celebrate Dr. Edwards’ outstanding scholarship and his valuable contributions to supporting BST’s mission: Shaped by His Word, Serving His World.
